Big Mike's boot camp is the perfect way to start the day.  I hate the gym and get bored of just running, so I decided to give this a try about six months ago after reading the Yelp reviews.  I was skeptical at first, but have to say that Big Mike and his classes have been fantastic.

The three weekly workouts are diverse and change monthly to keep you from getting bored.  Mike is a great cheerleader and motivator, and also a genuinely nice human.  Regardless of your fitness level, you will find ways to challenge yourself in this class.  That's one of the things that I really admire about how Mike runs the program--he is able to make it a valuable experience for everyone.  It's all about the motivation and energy that you bring.  He will help wring every last drop of sweat out of you and leave you feeling rubbery but with the endorphin high to handle the rest of the day in stride.

Personally, I've definitely noticed that the workouts have an impact.  To cop a line from Daft Punk, this class has made me harder better faster stronger.  I recently ran the LA Marathon and finished in a good time with 3x week of Big Mike plus a weekly long run as my training regimen.  This is a legit workout that will make you stronger and fitter if you come out every morning and try hard.

Mike also does a nice job of building community and it's clear that he cares about everyone in his class.  Social outings and occasional get togethers outside of the beach setting are a nice addition to the package.  Finally, I do like that you can come to 6am, 7am or 9am.  I have done all of the different time slots and appreciate the flexibility for my schedule.

If you're looking for a good morning workout in Santa Monica, you can't do better than Big Mike.
